Cambodia communication No.23/83
November 16th
It has been announced that the fifth conference to review the operation of the Anti-Personnel Landmine Convention (Ottawa Convention) will be held in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in November 2024. According to the Cambodian government, representatives from around 200 countries from around the world will attend the conference.
In Cambodia, vast swaths of land have been contaminated with landmines due to nearly 20 years of conflict and civil war since 1970. The Cambodian government is working to clear landmines with support from the international community, led by the Mine Action Center (CMAC).
Currently, in addition to its domestic activities, it is also utilizing its accumulated technology and experience to provide technical cooperation to other landmine-contaminated countries. In 2011, the 11th Conference of the Parties to the Ottawa Convention was held in Phnom Penh.
The Ottawa Treaty prohibits the use, development, production, storage, possession, and transfer of anti-personnel landmines, and went into effect in 1999. As of December 2020, there are 164 signatory countries. Cambodia joined in 1999.
